How do you become an industrial engineer?

Industrial engineers can study industrial engineering at universities, universities of applied sciences and colleges. There is also the option of studying part-time.

You can complete a degree programme in various fields here. Whether it's civil engineering or industrial engineering in the railway sector, everything is possible.

An internship in a company is compulsory for most industrial engineering degree programmes.

You can complete the programme in 6 to 8 semesters with a Bachelor's degree. If you would like to specialise or significantly improve your job prospects, you should then complete a Master's degree.

In addition to the degree programme, an industrial engineer must have a wide range of soft skills. First of all, you need to be a team player as you will be working with many different people. You will need to find creative solutions to problems and be able to work under pressure. Discipline and ambition are just as important as stress resistance. In addition, you must be able to understand interrelationships quickly and have a high level of technical understanding. Logical and analytical thinking round off your profile. A good command of English is also a prerequisite.

In which areas do industrial engineers work?

Industrial engineers can work in many areas. Whether it's an engineering office or you opt for a freelance career, work for an energy supplier or go into logistics. You can also opt for medical technology or pharmacy. Electrical engineering and robotics are also open to you. Of course, as an industrial engineer you will also be in demand in the construction industry or the automotive industry.

How much can you earn as an industrial engineer?

There are some differences in the salary of industrial engineers, which by and large depend on various factors. Firstly, the sector in which you will be working is important. Then the location of the company and its size are important.

More is paid in the old federal states and in the north of Germany than in the east and south. Industrial engineers have the best salary prospects in Hesse.

Ultimately, however, it is also important how much professional experience you have. As a beginner, you will obviously not earn as much as after 10 years of professional experience.

It can be said that the salary of an industrial engineer is usually between 4,200 and 5,400 euros gross per month.
