How do you become a systems engineer and what do you need to be able to do?

You must have extensive knowledge in various areas. Ideally, you need to have completed a degree programme in Systems Engineering. There are currently 10 universities in Germany that offer this Bachelor's degree programme. If you are aiming for a Master's degree, you have more universities to choose from.

Alternatively, you may have completed a degree in electrical engineering or mechanical engineering.

You must have sound knowledge of object-orientated analysis. In addition, you must be very familiar with modelling using SystML, UML or Rhapsody. You also need experience in the area of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).

You also need experience in requirements management and must be familiar with tools such as IBM DOORS and Enterprise Architect.

Depending on the industry, you should have knowledge and preferably also experience in the various product development processes. You must be familiar with integrated hardware and software systems. You must also be familiar with all standards and guidelines.

What soft skills do systems engineers need?

Of course, as soft skills you need to be able to communicate, work in a team and have a confident demeanour. You need to be creative and able to develop successful technical solutions.

How much can you earn as a systems engineer?

Systems engineers have a great deal of responsibility and in many cases even responsibility for entire projects. This is reflected in an above-average salary.

Systems engineers can therefore expect a starting salary of up to 50,000 euros gross per year. The salary always depends on your experience, the size of the respective company, the industry and, of course, the location. Salaries are always lower in the east than in the west. Salaries are also higher in the north than in the south, with the exception of Baden-Württemberg.

If you already have professional experience as a systems engineer, you can expect an average annual salary of between 65,000 and 90,000 gross per year.
