How do you become a civil engineer?

You usually need a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering. Alternatively, you can also have a similar engineering degree in a related field. The degree can be obtained at a university of applied sciences or a university.

If you want to specialise afterwards, you will need a Master's degree and, of course, the relevant practical experience.

Where can civil engineers work?

You can specialise as a civil engineer in the following areas:

  • Building construction and civil engineering
  • Hydraulic engineering and waste management
  • Building materials science
  • Traffic Engineering
  • Geotechnics
  • Building Informatics and Building Information Modelling (BIM)
  • Urban development and spatial planning

What soft skills does a civil engineer need?

You need analytical skills and an in-depth understanding of maths and physics. You must be able to perform static and dynamic calculations and plan and realise projects.

In any case, you also need good knowledge of CAD software and BIM.

How much can you earn as a civil engineer?

If you work as a civil engineer, you will gain a lot of experience over time, which will be reflected in your salary. Basically, the salary of a civil engineer can vary depending on your degree, how much professional experience you have, which industry you want to work in, but also in which region you will be working.

The average starting salary for a civil engineer in Germany is around 50,000 euros gross per year. Less is paid in the east than in the west of Germany.

You can therefore say that the salary is around 3,000 to 4,500 euros gross per month.

If you have worked as a civil engineer for several years and have gained professional experience, the salary can be between 5,000 and 7,000 euros gross per month.

Your salary will be higher, especially if you work in a managerial position on a construction project or have extensive professional experience. Additional qualifications such as a Master's degree or special certifications will also be remunerated in your salary. After some time, you can expect a salary of well over 60,000 euros gross per year.
